WELCOME TO DERUTA: WORLD CAPITAL OF CERAMICS
We welcome you to visit Deruta, close to both Assisi and Perugia in the center of Umbria—the “Green Heart of Italy”. Umbria is the land of saints and mecca for artistic, historical and gastronomic treasures. Pottery fans the world over flock to this picturesque medieval town of 7,000 people to buy vibrant Deruta ceramics, considered to be Italy's best.
Many featured designs have been popular since Renaissance times. Raffaello created the best known motif, the angel-like dragons shown above. This design bears the master artist’s name: “Raffaellesco”. The high-quality local clay has attracted artisans for hundreds of years. Just a few of the well known artists of Deruta were Giacomo Mancini, also called "El Frate" and Andrea di Cecco, both from the 16th Century; Lazzaro di Battista Faentino, Francesco Urbini and Gregorio Caselli of the 18th Century. Raffaello himself was tutored by the great artist Pietro Vannucci in Perugia, not far from Deruta. These early masters inspire our designs today.
