Famous Italian
Enzo Ferrari. Born 18 February 1898 as Enzo Anselmo Ferrari in Modena. When Enzo was only 10, his father took his brother Alfredo and him to a car race in Bologna and from then he was hooked. He raced successfully for Alfa Romeo (founded in 1910 as Alfa Milano and changed to Alfa Romeo in 1920. ALFA stands for Anonima Lombarda Fabrica Automobili. Alfa Romeo fans and owners include King Farouk, Ali Khan, Rita Hayworth, Tyrone Power, Prince Ranier and Totò. Even Henry Ford used to tip his hat out of respect when he saw an Alfa Romeo pass). When competing in Ravenna in 1923 Countess Paolina Baracca, the mother of Italy's World War I flying ace Francesco Baracca, asked him to put his son's prancing horse or “Cavallino Rampante” emblem on his car for good fortune and this later became the symbol of the Ferrari company when he founded Ferrari in 1947. He started to design the first Ferrari in 1945. On the 2 March 1947, Enzo himself drove the first Ferrari 125S through the factory gates. President of the Italian Republic Sandro Pertini, awarded Enzo Ferrari the title of Knight of the Italian Republic's Great Cross. In 1987 the last car to have been created under Enzo Ferrari was launched--the F40. Ferrari’s Formula One is the oldest, best known and loved team in Grand Prix history. Enzo Ferrari left an indelible mark on the automobile and racing industries and was posthumously inducted into the International Motorsports Hall of Fame in 1994. He died on 14 August 1988 at the age of 90.

Place to visit
Erbusco. The richest, most highly developed and most densely populated region of Italy is Lombardy which boasts an impressive cultural and artistic heritage. Southwest of Milano, you will find the quaint town of Erbusco in the Province of Brescia which is near beautiful Lago d’Iseo and the picturesque town of Sirmione at the southern-most shore of Lake Garda. Seven miles South you will find the town of Solferino on a hill where the Battle of Solferino was fought. It is here on 24 June 1859 where 40,000 men were killed or wounded in a single day when the French and Piedmontese (led by Vittorio Emmanuele II and Napoleon III) drove the Austrians out of Northern Italy. Jean Henri Dunant mobilized local people to assist the wounded and told the nurses, “Tutti siamo fratelli” (“We are all brothers”—prior to that, there were no guidelines for helping the wounded in battle) which started the International Red Cross movement after he authored the book “A Memory of Solferino”. Visit the fascinating International Red Cross Museum in nearby Castiglione di Stiviere, a charming town in the province of Mantua and afterward eat at the marvelous ristorante Gonzaga. Erbusco is also close to Piacenza, an agricultural and commercial center on the Po River where you can visit the Lombard-Gothic Palazzo del Comune built in 1281 and the Church of San Savino founded in the 12th century.
Restaurant
Gualtiero Marchesi named after Italy’s most famous chef, culinary ambassador and saint of the Italian kitchen: Gualtiero Marchesi. In 1993 Gualtiero Marchesi was the first non French chef to obtain three Michelin stars and is among the top fifteen chefs in the world. Marchesi is a Milanese gentleman who normally wears a charcoal-grey suit and black turtleneck. Michelin rates this venerable institution, located at the L’Albereta villa, a rare four red forks and two stars! Italy is a land known for the finest and highest quality pastas, meats, fresh produce, mushrooms, truffles, cheeses and the best wines and olive oils. No where are these national treasures better prepared than at Gualtiero Marchesi. While reading a review like this, it’s merely a highly rated restaurant. When you experience it in person, it becomes a temple of Italian epicurean pleasures! A few of the gourmet delicacies served: salad of caviar spaghetti, unique open raviolo, macaroni au gratin with zabaione, pigeon breasts with ravioli, gomiti with curry sauce, asparagus and scallops. Gualtiero Marchesi was born in Milano in 1930. At early age he developed a passion for food and cooking. His first professional experience was at the family hotel and restaurant, "Mercato" in Milan. After earning a premier reputation there, to improve his knowledge and techniques, he worked for some of the top French restaurants: Ledoyen in Paris, Le Chapeau Rouge in Dijon and the restaurant of the Troigros brothers in Roanne near Lyons. The International Academy of Gastronomy awarded Gualtiero Marchesi the Grand Prix “Mémoire et Gratitude”, its most prestigious prize. You can benefit from all of Gualtiero’s passion for cooking and training by dining at the extraordinary restaurant named after him. Buon appetito! Winery
Ca’ Del Bosco. Erbusco, Brescia. Ca’ Del Bosco has for many years been a benchmark for Italian wine. You will have to visit the winery to understand the innovations introduced by Maurizio Zanella, its fiery creator and president. Not a man to rest on his laurels, Maurizio has always striven for an ideal of winemaking perfection unattainable by mere mortals, at least not in just one lifetime. Maurizio has finished work on a new cellar that embodies the state of the art in design, equipment and technology. Ca’ Del Bosco, with its two stars, has been awarded 26 Three Glass awards, the second highest total in Italy. "Franciacorta" is a specific type of sparkling wine from an area in Erbusco as opposed to "methode champenoise" or "spumante." The celebrated winery was founded in 1968. |

Wine
Franciacorta Cuvée Annamaria Clementi 1997. “The Franciacorta Cuvée Annamaria Clementi 1997 is simply spectacular. It has a persistent, continuous perlage of incredible finesse and extraordinary fragrant aromas of just-ripened apples and pears, spring flowers and vanilla, with a delicate hint of boisé that slips into minerality. The broad, sumptuous palate is rich in fruit and the rock-solid structure supported by an extremely well-balanced acid vein. All of this culminates in an extraordinary length well worth Three Glasses” says Gambero Rosso, the world’s leading guide of Italian wines for over 18 years.
