Did you know?
When Italy won the World Soccer Championships? 1934, 1938 and again in 1982. Among the 17 times the World Cup has been played since 1930, Italy has claimed the championship three times. Only Brazil has bested Italy with five victories. Soccer (Football or “calcio” as it’s called in Italian) is just as much Italian as Mamma’s homemade ravioli, Chianti and the coliseum in Rome! Soccer provides a common bond for a diverse people and is more than Italy’s national sport – it’s a national passion. Italy is vying to host the World Cup in 2012 (Candidature logo to the right). |

Famous Italian
Vittorio Emanuele II. Born Vittorio Emanuele Maria Alberto Eugenio Ferdinando Tommaso di Savoia on 14 March 1820 in Turin. In 1861 he became King of Italy and the first sovereign of a united Italy. Thanks to his skillful command and with the brilliant actions of his prime minister, Count Camillo Benso di Cavour, the Kingdom of Sardinia grew to include all of Italy. Although Giuseppe Garibaldi is rightly considered the leader of the movement to unite Italy, it was Victor Emmanuel II who made the effort for complete unification from 1861-1870. He was affectionately called “Padre della Patria”–Father of the Homeland. Thousands of Italian towns have statutes or monuments in tribute to Vittorio Emmanuelle II. The most spectacular salute to Italy’s popular king is the colossal Vittorio Emmanuele II Monument in Rome. (Picture to the right) The massive building was begun in 1911 and completed in 1921 in Piazza Venezia. It’s the symbol of Italian unity and two guards stand watch in front of the tomb of the Unknown Soldier from World War I. Prominent in the middle of the monument is a gigantic bronze equestrian statue of King Vittorio Emmanuele II. King Victor Emmanuel II was born of the House of Savoy (Savoia) which ruled parts of Italy and Europe for 999 years. Vittorio Emanuele II died on 9 January 1878. |

Place to visit
Isola Bella, Lago Maggiore. "For however fanciful and fantastic the Isola Bella may be, and is, it still is beautiful," said Charles Dickens in 1844. Lake Maggiore, located in Piedmont which borders Lombardy and Switzerland, is the second largest lake in Italy.
There's a statue of Winston Churchill erected on the grounds of the Lido Palace Hotel in Baveno, on Lake Maggiore, where Churchill spent part of his honeymoon with Lady Clementine in 1908. The Lido Palace offers discounts to Churchill Centre members. It’s difficult to recommend one of these jewels above the others as each lake, Como, Maggiore and Garda are splendid. Isola Bella, means “beautiful island” and is purely a place of ideal beauty. In 1632, Count Vitaliano Borromeo began the construction of the monumental Baroque palace and the majestic and scenic gardens, which have made the island famous and to this day bear witness to the splendors of an era. The Borromeo Family Palace offers visitors an elegant and sumptuous setting and it contains priceless works of art. It also boasts an unusual mosaic grotto, a c ool and delightful place. Once you have visited the palace, there’s access to the garden for a pleasant walk. The gardens form an extraordinary, flowered monument laid out over a series of ornate and overlapping terraces, a classic and inimitable example of seventeenth century "Italian garden". The rare and exotic white peacocks which often roam the gardens are wondrous! Isola Bella is connected to Stresa, Arona, Pallanza, Locarno and other lakeside towns by the boats of the Navigazione Lago Maggiore Company.

Winery
Ceretto. Alba, CN, Cuneo. They have their cellars designed by famous architects and designers, but when they want to talk about vineyards, they do it with the village postino (postman), sindaco (mayor) and doctor. This is the philosophy of Bruno and Marcello Ceretto , the remarkable brothers who, starting from their father Riccardo’s small firm founded in 1937, have managed to reach the top of their chosen profession in just a few decades. Their children , Roberta, Federico, Lisa and Alessandro have inherited the family spirit and promise a new, fruitful blend of tradition and revolution. It’s not easy to marry quantity with quality but the Ceretto family manage to do so.

Wine
Barolo Zonchera 2000. Due bichiere or two glasses. “ This is a soft, harmonious, velvety Barolo with limited tannin content and a generally fine balance between alcohol and acid. It displays extraordinary drinkability after just a few months in the bottle, and in excellent vintages it can be enjoyed for at least ten years. The Barolo Zonchera is as good as ever, thanks to shrewdly applied wood and good raw material that regales nose and palate with red berry fruit,” says Gambero Rosso.
