Nanakusa in Japanese means "seven herbs." In Japan, there is a custom to eat nanakusa-gayu (seven herb rice porridge) on 7 January. These seven herbs are called "haru no nanakusa (seven herbs of spring)." It is said that these herbs will remove evil from the body and prevent illness. Also, people tend to eat and drink too much on New Year's Day, therefore it’s an ideal light and healthy meal with a lot of vitamins. There are also "aki no nanakusa (seven herbs of autumn)," but they are usually not eaten and used instead for decorations to celebrate the autumn equinox week or the full moon in September.

Japanese Proverbs Including Seven: "Nana-korobi Ya-oki" literally means, "seven falls, eight getting up." The "Shichi-Fukujin," translated either as the "Seven Gods of Happiness" or "Seven Gods of Luck" are personifications of earthly happiness in Japanese folk religion. They are:

Hotei: the "fat" or "laughing" Buddha , who personifies mirth and merriment.
Bishamonten: the watchman
Fukurokuju: the god of longevity
Jurojin: the god of scholarship
Daikokud: the god of nutrition
Ebisue: the god of fishing

In Chinese culture, the number 7 also features rather prominently in some aspects of life. For example, the seventh day of the first moon of the lunar year is known as Human's Day. That day is considered the birthday of all human beings universally. This is why Chinese are deemed to be a year older on that day, regardless of what the actual date of birth is. But this is not to say that Chinese do not celebrate a birthday on the day of birth. Similarly, when someone dies, a special ceremony is held on the 49th day after death, that is, 7 x 7 days. It signifies the final parting.

Shivviti plaques, generally decorated with biblical verses forming a menorah, the seven-branch candelabrum, were used in the synagogue and in Hebrew homes. The statement by the Sages (Vayikra Rabbah 29:10) that “all sevens are precious” is derived from their understanding that seven is the primary cycle of time as revealed by God in the Torah. In days, weeks, months, years and millennia, the number seven appears as the principle cycle by which Jews mark the continual flow of time. The continual observance of Shabbat plugs believers into a Divine energy and pattern of time, the very model of creation relived on a weekly basis. There are two seven-week periods in the Jewish year — one prescribed by the Torah and one by the Sages. There are seven weeks in the period between Pesach — the redemption from Egypt — and Shavuot — the giving of the Torah on Mount Sinai. These seven weeks, or seven-times-seven (49) Omer period, serves to connect these two holidays.

They were divided into the trivium, namely grammar (i.e. literature), rhetoric and dialectic and the more advanced quadrivium, namely arithmetic, geometry, music and astronomy.

Seven wise masters are also called the seven viziers. There’s the story of the Seven Sages or Sinbadnameh, "The Book of Sindbad" which is a cycle of stories, presumably Indian in origin, that made its way through Middle Persian and Arabic into Western lore. The primary plot involves an Asian king who entrusts the education of his son to a wise tutor named Sindbad (not to be confused with the sailor of “The Thousand and One Nights”). During seven days when the prince was ordered by Sindbad to maintain silence, his stepmother tried to seduce him. Having failed, she tried to accuse the prince before the king and sought to have him killed by telling seven stories. Each of her narratives were refuted by seven sages, who in turn told tales of the craft of women. The prince's lips were at last unsealed and the truth made known. The oldest surviving text of the story is in classical Arabic.

Emerging nations had long complained that their interests were not addressed during the G7 meetings; these concerns resulted in the first meeting (1999) of the newly formed Group of 20 (G20), with the G7 nations plus Argentina, Australia, Brazil, China, the European Union, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, South Korea and Turkey.

In London’s Underground there is a stop named Seven Sisters tube located on Seven Sisters Road.

Seventh Heaven. The Muhammadan Seventh Heaven, is said to be "beyond the power of description." In the Islamic graded concept of heaven, which also prevailed among the Jews, one goes after death to the heaven he or she has earned on earth, and the Seventh Heaven, ruled by Abraham, is the ultimate one, a region of pure light lying above the other six--the Heaven of Heavens. Anyone in Seventh Heaven is thus in a state of celestial bliss, having the greatest possible pleasure.

Additional Biblical significance associated with the number Seven

What is known as “The Seven Last Words” are the last utterance of Christ on the cross and those seven words are: "My God, why hast thou forsaken me?" ...recorded in Mark 15:34, and Matthew 27:46.

Matthew 18:21: Then Peter approaching asked him, "Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive him? As many as seven times?"

Jesus answered, "I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times.

That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. (Other versions state 70 x 7 times or 490 to imply ad infinitum; the number 490 is used other times in the Bible to imply infinity).

Matthew 1:17: All the generations from Abraham unto David are fourteen (2x7) generations; and from David until the carrying away to Babylon fourteen generations; and from the carrying away to Babylon to Christ there were fourteen generations.

The Number Seven has two fundamental meanings in Scripture: completeness, fullness or completion and to swear, to make an oath, to vow. Jesus said to "forgive seventy-seven" times. In other words, He is saying, "Keep on forgiving until you will be complete."

The Bible mentions a “seventh heaven”—a state of bliss.

The Hebrew verb for "to swear" means literally to come under the influence of seven things; thus, seven ewe lambs figure in the oath between Abraham and Abimelech at Beersheba (Genesis 21:28).

Old Testament Sevens

Proverb 6: Seven things the Lord hates: Pride - a proud look; Lying - a lying tongue; Murder - the shedding of innocent blood; Plotting evil - a heart that devises wicked imaginations; Haste - feet swift to do mischief; Gossip - a false witness; Discord / Condemnation - accusing of the brethren.

Isaiah 41: Seven trees: Cedar, Shittah, Myrtle, Oil, Fir, Pine and Box trees.

Seven times Ezekiel says, “The hand of the Lord is upon me.”

Psalm 150: Seven Instruments of Praise: trumphet, harp, timbrel, dance, stringed instruments, organs and cymbals.

Psalm 51: seven key steps to renewal: wash me, cleanse me, purge me, renew me, restore me, uphold me and deliver me.

New Testament Sevens

Sevenfold unity of the Spirit: Ephesians 4
One body
One Spirit
One hope
One Lord
One faith
One baptism
One God

Add seven things to your faith: 2 Peter 1:6

Virtue
Knowledge
Temperance
Patience
Godliness
Brotherly and sisterly kindness
Charity —never fails from a pure heart

The number 777 is often chosen to represent God. Seven as the perfect number times three which equates to the Holy Trinity.

SEVEN and SPORTS

Most sports programs are steeped in numerical glory. Jerseys of famous players hang in locker rooms, sports stadiums and the famous ones are framed and replicas are made and sold to fans. Players become synonymous with their numbers. Certain player numbers are near-sacred like Michael Jordan’s 23. These player numbers are retired amid huge celebrations and entrusted to future generations for perpetuity.

The first time a sports team used numbers on jerseys was in 1907 (Reading, Pennsylvania Red Roses of the Atlantic Baseball League) Inspired by hockey’s and football’s use of uniform numbers, the Cleveland Indians became the first big league club to experiment with numbered uniforms when they took the field at League Park in Cleveland on 26 June 1916, donning large numerals on their left sleeves. Johnny Neves of the Northern League Fargo-Moorhead Twins wore uniform number “7” backwards on the back of his 1951 jersey. After all, his name spelled backwards is “seven.” Numerous athletes with the jersey number 7, when traded, required having the number seven as part of their contract. A high percentage of those players with a #7 jersey are quarterbacks, centers, forwards, team captains and/or leading scorers.
